Kerry and I have decided to work with Swedish Medical Center to start the NICU Family Support Group. One of the most wonderful parts of the Swedish NICU was having a private room, but this also had a drawback. Because there wasn’t a “common area”, we were separated from the other families – so much so that at times we (Kerry) really felt isolated and alone. There were times that we wanted to reach out to other parents, but we also didn’t want to interrupt the precious (sometimes little) time they had with their child(ren). Our hope is to bring a little togetherness to the NICU by meeting with the families once a week – sharing stories, bragging about milestones, etc. Not only will we (and other graduates) get to share our experience of being a NICU family, but the current families will get to meet the other families whose child(ren) are patients of the Swedish NICU.
