Want vs. Need

Published by Kerry | Filed under Uncategorized

We need two highchairs.  Soon.  Actually really soon.

WWYD???  We want HONEST opinions/thoughts from other moms and dads, or anyone really.  And no offense Kristy, but you don’t count because we already know which one you would choose.  =)

Want…

(Pros – super easy and fast set-up, around 5 lbs each, easy to travel with and store, for kiddos 6 months – 5 years old  //  Con – around $150 each)

wantwantwant

vs.

Need…

(Pros – around 7 lbs each, easy to travel with and store, around $50 each  //  Cons – only good for kiddos up to 3 years old, a little bit more time-consuming to set up)

I have no experience with the first one. However, we have the second one and have used it for travel. There are two things to know about it: there is a 2 inch gap between the table and child, therefore a lot of food ends up on the floor and it doesn’t work with all tables, as the brackets attaching it are very long and not all tables are flat underneath.

If these are the only 2 you are considering I’m w/ #2 because it saves you $200. We have this one though and love it (and yes we travel with it)

I definitely would not spend $150 on a high chair. It’s misleading that they say they last so long because you wouldn’t need a high chair that long.

We got ours on Craigslist, conincidentally from a mom of twins. I think highchairs are a good CL item because they’re so durable.

I’d go with #2 of those two choices for the money saving, but I’m still voting against #2. You want something that’s easy to wash off and anything with fabric is a pain – especially since you’re cleaning up after two! If you’re liking the space-saving aspect, I’d go with something like the Fisher Price Healthy Care Boosters or something similar. They’re easy to clean and light enough to travel if you want to take them with you.

Oh, and I love the craigslist suggestion! Definitely worth looking. You definitely won’t want high chairs for up to 5 yrs – boosters take up so much less space and they can use them fairly early, so that would be a great way to go in another year or so to save more space.

The expensive one wouldn’t work at our house or at your grandpa Hanna’s – on the chairs we have. The other one might work (you’re pushing the skirting limit); Ivory’s would be better.

We don’t have twins, so we have a SafetyFirst one that was about $90 for home and one from amazon (I believe called insignia) that was $60 and we got it for $48 including shipping. It looks like #2 and is much safer than restaurant high chairs, plus you don’t have to worry about all the germs when youbring your own!

    Just my .02 :)

The boys aren’t going to be in high chairs/boosters for that long – trust me!

we got a similiar one as your “need” and love it! It is really lightweight and easy to travel with. the brand is phil and ted’s (me too) chair and from land of nod. http://www.landofnod.com/high-chairs/baby/1

    hey!
i think number 2 as well if those are the only 2 you are considering. we just got regular highchairs they were 60 each and they can be lowered so even as they get a little older i can take the trays off and put it up to the table as a chair! i think my son was only in a highchair till 2 then he wanted nothing to do with it lol i wish he did longer though!

I am typing my opinion before reading everyone else’s so I don’t get swayed…I don’t like the ones that clamp onto the table at all. They freak me out. I keep thinking they could slide off or just slam to the ground at a moments noticed.

You know what I do for a living and I may have worked on a manufacturer of said baby chairs who had a LOT of those claims.

  12. angelika Says:

Ok, so I just showed them both to Eric and he was nice enough to point out that the 2nd one has clamps not clips! Its the clippy ones that scare me. Therefore – I think you would get lots more use out of #2. I think it would be easier to transport.

I think you need matching Stokke Tripp Trapps. :)

My MILs “traveling highchair” was to tie Owen to a kitchen chair with a sheet. It’s a little ghetto, but it totally worked. Restaurants have high chairs.

I’d get something you’ll use comfortably at home, but I wouldn’t spend as much as #1 on a high chair.

We got something like this http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2002&e=demo&pid=27475 to use after he was 1-ish. We borrowed a big one before that. I think it would work earlier.

Uh…if you’re putting your kids in high chairs after age 3, we can’t really be friends anymore. :)

    Get the cheap ones.

Mean! Even I would go with the “need” in this case. There will be plenty of other “wants” down the road that will make sense to spend more $$ on. And anyway, the “need” one is still pretty cute (but not as cute as the Tripp Trapp…). Love you!!

  18. Cyndi Says:

You aren’t going to need high chairs until they are 5 years old. By three they’ll be fighting you to sit at the table on their own. Definately #2.

  19. Cyndi Says:

Oh, and N uses the one Ivory suggested at my mom’s house and it’s fantastic.

  20. Jill Says:

Neither. I would NEVER spend $150 on a highchair..nope. And I am not a fan of the ones that clip/clamp on to the table either. I would save yourself some $$ and just get the $40 First Years ones that strap onto a chair…and then you’ve got a highchair and booster all in one. In my opinion there is really no need for a traveling highchair…restaurants have highchairs and who wants to lug more crap around when you don’t have to right?

  21. Jessica Says:

I do not have an experence with #1, but we have #2 for my moms house and I do not like it at all. Like another poster mentioned, there is a gap bwtween the table so a lot of food falls on the floor.

I also find it is hard to keep clean, food is always getting stuck to the hippo on the arms and in the cracks of the seat. It also does not work with every table.

  22. LeAnn Says:

Go with #2. We used it for Asher and LOVED it. I never felt it was unsafe, and I liked it because I felt like he was closer to the table. You won’t be taking them on and off every day, so I wouldn’t worry about that… save yourself some $$, and go with #2 (which you can get in red).

    [Reply]

  23. LeAnn Says:

…and #2 is great b/c it will offer M&W a little stability until they can sit up fully on their own (they can lean on the sides). I would not recomend the brand you have pictured- the seat is too shallow…

I would not spend a lot on high chairs by the time they are 3 they will be sitting in boosters not high chairs! They actually have boosters that have trays on them….Paige has one and each grandparents house and they work great. The trays come off when they are ready and then they can just sit at the table like big kids (Paige is already doing this and she isn’t even two yet)The booster ones are only $20-30 depending on which one you get! The high chair we have was $60.00 and I think that was a lot. We got it as a gift so it wasn’t a big deal but if we were buying it ourselves I would have gotten a cheapo one! Hope this helps!
